Welcome to Jiggi Public School.  We love our small school in the beautiful Jiggi Valley. Our school motto is "Learning for Life."

Established since 1899, Jiggi school has been a focal point for the people residing in the Jiggi valley. There has been much speculation about why the word Jiggi, and the most generally accepted version is that that there was a very common cat bird in the area referred to in Aboriginal terms as "Jiguary". According to local legend this bird was usually seen hopping excitedly from branch to branch- jigging about "jiggi jiggi".

Permission was given on the 1st September 1898 for building operations to commence on the original school site on the Lismore to Nimbin Road. The first wooden schoolroom was erected by H. Dunsmore for the sum of 50 pound 3 shillings and 3 pence. This original building was burnt down and another was built in 1923 and has been in use ever since.

The first teacher was Herbert William Moffitt, with32 children enrolled
